this is arden and i. have i said lately?...i love my girls! thank you to jess for pulling the trigger on this shot. we just barely got this one before she outgrew them. this is an older shot, that i forgot to post when i shot it. we have soooo...many photos of arden right now. we probably shoot on average 500-1000 / month! (glad it's digital).

i am in the process of selecting several (hundred) of those photos and putting them together in a book. through looking at all the various book printers, i think i have decided to go with blurb. when it's finished i hope to post a video review of how it turned out. stay tuned for that... (hopefully by the end of summer)

(new custom photoshop action - 19-eighty-two)

on another note: i have been thinking again...i think i have gotten entirely too technical about photography. i bought all the equipment...cameras, lenses, accessories, strobes...yadda, yadda, yah... and while that stuff comes in handy for certain situations and usually in paid, indoor shoots, i don't feel that i need it all the time. and sometimes it even gets in the way and hinders the creative shots you might get otherwise without having to think about this lens or that, or what your lighting settings and angles should be. so, that being said, i am attempting to go back to simple - the way i got into photography, and loved it - by keeping a lot of gear stored away, and taking a minimal amount with me. that usually means only 1 camera body and a couple of primes (85 and 35 or 50), no 70-200, no battery grip, maybe one strobe (just in case)...just small and simple. and MUCH lighter! also going back to as much natural light or window light as possible. and even when i may have an assignment that requires lighting, only taking one strobe with an umbrella on a stand, and making that work for me. i am amazed at how well that works, and how quickly and easily i can get the shot and be done. My wife boils all this down to one question that she always asks me, "why don't you just uncomplicate it?". so there, I hope to be a little more uncomplicated for a while.

i'm not going to be one of those guys with all the equipment, and tell you "it's not about the equipment. you could shoot this with an iPhone." it IS about the equipment (sometimes). you just don't need it ALL the time.

what started this thinking was the fact that when at home and i want to get a shot of my daughter, or anything else for that matter, my go-to camera is the d80 with the 50mm stuck on it. why? because it's small, already set up, and i can think about the shot and not the equipment.

anyway just some of my thoughts written out. dh.

Happy Birthday, Baby

Happy Birthday, Baby

Brad turns 31 today, the old bastard! Unfortunately, he's in Oregon wearing a turtleneck and standing underneath a pine tree or whatever the hell people do in Oregon, so we have to celebrate when he gets back on Wednesday night.

Anyway, Brad decided that his birthday present this year would be Gears of War 2, and the other day I went down to the geek store on his behalf and traded in some of his old games and put his name on the list for a copy whenever it comes out. It turns out that I only owed 19 cents after the trade. Bargain!

We're trying to save money in preparation for the baby (apparently they require lots of cash, and prefer to sleep in a "crib" instead of an empty Yuengling box), so Brad wanted his NINETEEN CENT TRADE-IN to be his only birthday present. Shenanigans, I say! I'm sorry, but that's just lame. I cannot abide a 19-cent birthday present for anyone, let alone the man who pretends my angry outbursts are charming. Budget be damned - I'm buying him something else tonight. The kid will just have to deal. Maybe go without diapers for a week or so (can't we just put down some newspapers?). We're all making sacrifices here, is what I'm saying.

Dear God He's Back!

Dear God He's Back!

Sorry for the disappearance for the last five days everyone...(assuming anyone even noticed, that's how slack I've been on here lately). I pulled a stupid move and deleted my Yahoo! account not remembering that it was connected to my Flickr account. Therefore, I was not able to sign into Flickr. My pictures and stream and everything were still here (praise Jebus) but I was very fortunate. In the next few months, Flickr is gonna have it to where if you close your Yahoo! account then your Flickr stream automatically goes bye bye unlike how it is now where it just orphans it. Make sure you read the FAQs about moving your stream to a NEW Yahoo! account ID before you delete your OLD account. Fortunately the people at Yahoo! were able to reactivate my account before it was totally deleted.....(Flickr didn't even respond to my questions and requests about fixing the problem, go figure). Anyway, it's nice to be back and see each and every one of your smiling faces!

....well, everyone except -Cronos- because he never smiles........

and then there were four

and then there were four

Well, I started out with 3 babies in the house (the 2 little girls and the boy that reminds me of Freddy) Then I discovered a little boy down in the barn that none of the mothers wanted to claim as their own. I finally figured out who he belonged to, but she didn't want anything to do with him, so I brought him inside. Two days later, I got another mother to accept him, so he was "adopted" and went back outside. That very same day, in the early morning, I found another little boy outside of the fence next to the barn. The poor little guy had somehow gotten through the fence, but couldnt' get back in during the night. He was literally frozen, and nearly dead. When I brought him inside, I really thought he wouldn't make it, and I felt like I was just making his last few minutes/hours as comfortable as possible. Well, he survived! And he's in the house to stay too (it took a few days to get him back on his feet, and by then his mother didn't want him anymore).

So all 4 babies are staying in a dog cage, in the kitchen. Don't worry, they aren't as crowded as they look in this picture. The cage is about 3 feet x 4 feet, and they get to come out and play several times a day. I just can't let them loose all the time - they're a bunch of little trouble makers and they get into everything! Yesterday I turned my back for a miniute and found one standing in the middle of our coffee table!

Boom Boom, Beep Beep, Roar!: My Sounds Book

Bang, bang. Crash. Purrrr. WAAH! Toddlers will have a fine time beeping, tweeting, and roaring with this entertaining board book. David Diehl’s stylish and engaging pictures evoke their noises so well that each sound is practically audible. A red-trimmed motorcycle zooms across a bright yellow page with a vroom vroom. An open-mouthed rooster gives a resounding cock a doodle doo. A lion roars, a child jumps in a puddle and goes splash, and a big bass drum goes boom boom boom. The simple text and appealing design will encourage children to get involved—and provide an active, fun experience.

week #4/52: the static

week #4/52: the static

Every night, part of me says, find a day job. Find something responsible, teaching piano lessons, or audition for symphony work. Likely both if I want to support a family. The other part of me says responsible is the last thing I want to be.

I come home late most nights, the same time of night the drunks have all been kicked out of the bars, stumbling and laughing through the streets. Lara sleeps on the couch, TV on mute, book slipping out of her hand, two empty glasses of wine on the table. Two glasses is not unusual. She has friends. I can’t expect her to spend all these nights alone. She breathes so softly, but I can see her chest rise and fall. I don't hear her breaths, but instead the breaths of our girls, asleep upstairs, sound carried by baby monitor fuzz. We tried all the different brands, all combinations of channels and frequencies. I insisted on this house, she always likes to remind me. Constantly she likes to remind me, this one is my fault. It must be the spot, this one spot, the radio waves or cell phone towers give us inescapable static. We learn to live with it. We tune it down, still there, crackling beneath our perception like background noise.

- Pat, from "The Static" a neglected short story

I'm not exactly impressed with this shot. I did actually drink the wine out of those glasses, lol! So perhaps I wasn't in the most creative state of mind. Anyway, the static on the baby monitor was hard to do, and I ended up bringing the base into the living room to make it buzz. (Note, my actual child was sleeping at the time, and I didn't want to make too much noise.) Also, baby monitor interference is annoying to listen to while you take fifty-million shots of the monitor lights ;)

I don't know what I would have done differently. I don't think I like the composition. Not sure how I would have done it differently though, because the other arrangements I tried were fails too.

Ah well.

Continuing the theme of baby stuff and bumps, with the aim of hopefully changing the theme to babies some time soon! :-)

We were down at the hospital for a regular checkup and they listened into Bump's heartbeat - this is the result...
